Shelf Stable Foods
I've been experimenting with various items that are shelf stable - those that do not require refrigeration (and thus energy) to keep as pantry items on the boat.
Things I want to try:
Trader Joes Shelf Stable heavy whipping cream
| Cheddar Cheese powder | Great | Excellent for cheesy dishes and for cheese popcorn! |
| Sour Cream powder | Great | Sour cream and Heavy cream pows behave the same for cooking. I like the sour cream a little better for adding to dishes. |
| Heavy Cream powder | Great | HC powder is useful, and if you hydrate it and let it sit overnight in a fridge/cooler you have a reasonable creamer. |
| Freeze Dried Hash Browns | Meh | I tried hard with these. They just come out as squishy potato. I like powdered potatoes better. |
| Freeze dried mushrooms | Good | Rehydrate them a bit, fresh is always better but these are decent. |
| Freeze dried vegetables (various): | Meh | In general fresh or frozen is better, but these are good in a pinch to finish out a dish. I do find that they tend to provide lots of roughage. |
| Freeze dried shallots | Great |
I love these. Great in burgers and any time you can't get fresh shallots. |
| Idahoan instant potatoes | Good | Add some fresh goat cheese if you have it! Just add hot water and these rock. Minimal waterproof packaging is great on boats. |
| MCT Oil Powder | Good | I started using this in my coffee for Keto. The powders are decent. I usually add some cream or half and half but I could survive with just MCT pow as a creamer in a pinch. |
